    Description

    1871 Sampson Mordan and Kate Greenaway Sterling Silver Antique scent Bottle RARE
    This is an exceptional
    silver cylinder scent bottle, with a hinged top  and glass stopper.
    The body is masterfully engraved in the round with a children playing in town, as well the town.
    Condition: light surface age and use wear; nothing further found, good snap closure.
    Sterling Silver hallmarked for London 1871, maker's mark 'SM' for Sampson Mordan, marked in the lid, as well of bottom of the piece.

    Kate Greenaway was a prolific illustrator of children's' books, born in Hoxton in 1846, the daughter of a daughter of a draughtsman and engraver, John Greenaway.
    She popularised a style of drawing that is instantly recognisable as hers - delicate watercolours of children with animals and birds in the English countryside.
    Between 1882 – 1884 Greenaway pictures appeared on Mordan scent bottles almost always with children in the foreground and a house or church in the background.
    This special, beautiful rare, almost 150 years old piece standss 2 inches tall.
